Islam in Western Media
May 11th 2007 00:21
Of all religions in the western world, Islam seems to be the most misunderstood. Many people have preconceived notions of Muslims based on events such as September 11, 2001, an act of evil carried out – it seems – in the name of religion. A day marked in history representing a turning point in contemporary society. The media scrutinizes every move made in the name of Allah, and today Islam has been contructed as a religion confined to dark ages. The media have manufatured Muslims, creating a cultural and religious stereotype, using forcful language combined with pigeonholed undertones. The media has assisted in moulding generalisations, defining Islam in cultural terms and distinctly contorting practices.
Could it be said that Islam has dug its own grave and now has to bear the consequences? Or is it a valid argument to suggest that the media has painted Muslims with a brush of hate and mistrust?
