Depression...a state of mind??

May 17th 2007 07:52
Depression has been defined on numerous levels. Is it a state of mind? A mental disorder? (almost?). A chemical imbalance? Chemical changes in the brain?

As individuals, we are faced with circumstances and situations: sometimes a result of our actions, other times out of our control. We each have a different capacity. Capacity to deal with and overcome challenges and setbacks on our journey. For some, it seems the journey steps ahead of them, leaving their mind in mayhem; a place of darkness and despair: no hope. Trapped by a vacuum of existence, taking them deeper into a spiral of what seems eternal opacity.

Almost every person, at one time or another, experiences a period of sadness. This may result from physical, emotional, psychological or financial issues, or a combination. It is however, the individual's choice as to whether they allow their circumstance to control their emotional well-being and mental state of mind.

Depression is a result of your own thoughts. One is so captivated by the conditioning of their mind that they are held prisoner, and often lose sight of the bigger picture. Every persons' life is prewritten and predetermined by God, and therefore has a divine purpose.

It could be argued that depression is a mode. An operational state that a system (one's body and/or brain) has been switched to, and sometimes becomes a manner for existing.

As difficult as depression is; to acknowledge and overcome, is it an easy way out? The weakness lies in ones inability to pull the blindfold from their eyes and see beyond their circumstances, or lack thereof.

Depression resides in a persons' thoughts. If your thoughts are causing you to be depressed, hold them captive. Arrest them in their earliest state. Control the content of your mind; filter it to a maintainable degree.

Each of us faces trials and tribulations, but we need to recognise that they come with purpose and reward. A learning curve. A test of endurance. Do not see challenges as mountains, but as plains. You do not need to exhaust yourself climbing over them, rather step at your own pace through them.

Declare triumph on all occasions and know and believe that there are better and greater things for your life than to be caged by the demon of depression. Do not be held back by unnecessary measures or allow depression to become a growing fungus in your heart.

The devil works on your words and will use traps, tricks and lies to keep you hidden and dwelling in his dark place. Speak life and unto you life will come exceedingly and abundantly. Use your words to your advantage.

God wants to mend the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). No matter how downcast your life may seem, God promises that He is faithful and trustworthy. Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:6-7).

God loves each and every person, with no exception and no doubt. He wants to fill you to overflowing with love, joy and peace. He wants to fill the void on your life; the black hole where depression lies. When you have a realisation, an awakening, understanding and knowledge that there is a God in heaven who loves and adores you for who you are, and has a plan and purpose for your life, it is then that you will feel hope and find comfort.

In Christ we can have hope...

"I dont believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they cant find them, make them." George Bernard Shaw

I would like to say that I am a Christian first, and then a healthcare provider. What you say is true, and there is a definant way to overcome some forms of depression. However, I have seen where there are chemicals in people's brains that are altered causing this illness leaving medication an option for the natural as one can pray in the spiritual. Sometimes to place one on medication and then slowly weaning them is the best way for the patient to notice the onset of the symptoms of depression, leaving them with an empowerment to stop it before it starts by seeking help, whether the support network be family, church, counseling, etc.

I believe we live in a society of labels and everyone wants one. I believe we live in a society of doctors that are ready to happily to prescribe medications to treat an illness that may not even be the cause. But the symptoms say it is, so it must be so right? All in all, I believe we can do everything we can in the natural realm while God takes care of the rest through prayer and meditating on the Word.

Love your blog,
